About KATAKINA

Our company name “KATAKINA” was derived from a female character, CATARINA, in an ethnography Vita which depicts poverty in Brazil. When she makes her signature, she opens the top of the "R" in CATARINA and writes it as "K" instead of “R”.

Why?

She wanted to open her social relationship to the outside, mainstream world though she was mired in poverty.

We made our brand name "KATAKINA" following CATARINA who entrusted her "Hope" to the "K" so that we can connect traditional cultures to the contemporary mainstream world.

Sam Justi

Creative Director / Designer

I was born and raised in Palembang, Sumatra, Indonesia.

I was dreaming of commercializing my designs. Why had I wanted to pursue design? It’s because of an old painting that inspired me when I was young. I was fascinated by the mysterious cosmology, the facial expressions, the clothes, and the color scheme of the main characters in the painting. I started painting around this time. But I felt that my talent was lacking. I didn't have the means to improve my skills and techniques. I didn't even have the emotional support from my family. And then I gave up studying design at this time.

I came to Japan in 2013 in order to try my potential. I worked in the service industry for a while and gained social experience in Japan. When I was 26 years old, I came up with an idea if it is okay to continue working in a workplace where I could find nothing to aim for. I came all the way to Japan and did my best to survive, I might regret it if I continued the job in my only life. These worries shook my head and my heart every day. And finally in 2018 I quit my job despite my fears about the future and decided to pursue my dream.

I entered a design school and studied design for three years. Three years were very short. In addition, I was not young anymore. So, I had a hard time while I was studying in school. But I was lucky that my effort was rewarded somehow. I even won several design competitions. "KATAKINA" was planned and created while I was working on my graduation work. I designed everything from the logo to the pattern by myself. And I created a total apparel brand as my graduation project. I created a collection by rearranging the patterns that are characteristic of my Indonesian hometown into new designs. My graduation project was also worth the effort. After the graduation exhibition was over, my works were selected as an exhibition in cooperation with Shiseido Beauty Square in Harajuku. Being selected for this exhibition was one of the happiest things in my life.

I am interested in traditional works from Southeast Asia. This is because I have been inspired since my childhood days by the fascinating cosmology of each work and the stories behind it. The more you look at the works, the more you will be attracted to them. It will also affect your emotions. However, traditional things tend to be gradually forgotten in today's world. The younger generation is especially inclined to think that traditional patterns and designs are old-fashioned and have an image of the past. To be honest, I also had lost interest in traditional design in the past. But through working on my production in the school, my interest in traditional design returned. Now I am proud to say that I am interested in traditional design.

Today's apparel brands are expected to be new with seasonal trends. However, one thing I don’t want you to forget is that the current design was succeeding old designs. I launched KATAKINA hoping to deliver and remember worldwide traditional designs to younger generations and to those who are not interested in them now. I hope I can bring this feeling to everyone through KATAKINA's works.
